Bank & Trust

Most banks today try to recreate a classic design to create a reassuring strength in familiarity. Instead of falling back on the past this structure looks to the future to represent a forward thinking company with new ideas. Building upon the new ideas is a living roof that is accessible to the buildings top floor inhabitants. On the inside, natural light spills deep into the building from transom windows within the interior and large windows on the exterior.

Strip Mall

Most strip malls are unnoticeable as drivers pass by on busy suburban streets. Creating a structure that will make people want to come in and look was the theme for this strip mall located on an increasingly traveled intersection. The building takes advantage of natural light with large windows that can be opened for cross ventilation. Lights shine upward onto a wood lined ceiling that provides softer light and a more upscale feel.

Hunting Retreat

Designed for a fictitious client that desired a place to get away from his hectic life as a major league baseball player; this hunting retreat is set deep in the woods of Durango, Colorado. Since this is a retreat the layout is very simple and rustic to appeal to the client's love for the wilderness. The retreat is open to the outdoors on all sides allowing views of the beautiful setting. The bedrooms are open much like a tree house or loft rising up into the top of the structure.  

Calliope Hall (Senior Project)

Western Kentucky University (WKU) currently has only traditional style residence halls with community bathrooms and kitchens. As other universities around the country begin to build apartment style rooms WKU is being left behind. Calliope Hall fills this void and brings WKU’s residence halls to the 21st century with green design and new urbanism ideas.

The overall footprint is compacted to allow sunlight to penetrate deep into the building. Openings in the exterior are oriented to prevent too much light and heat entering the building. Residents will have a 24 hour restaurant and a convenience store so that they won’t have to travel far for supplies.

Calliope Hall expands on a new concept at WKU known as living and learning communities. The residence hall is open to all junior and senior design students to live, work, create, and expand their knowledge. Studios both indoors and out are available for students to meet, share ideas, and produce their work. For that reason the building is named after Homer’s muse for the Odyssey and Illiad, Calliope.

While working as a construction worker I pieced together parts of buildings such as doors and walls. This makes detailing the various parts that make up a building much more efficient. With these examples, my training and experience in both residential and commercial construction are represented.

During my education it has become apparent that floor plans are about much more than the placement of walls and fixtures. A floor plan is a map with directions that lead you to various sheets in the construction documents. It also provides information on rooms and square footage figures. With all of this it becomes evident that a floor plan is a very important building block that is the basis for much of the project.

The ultimate goal of all these documents is to provide instruction on how to build the structure. With this site plan it is providing information on where to locate it. I have gained the skills to create them from studying trigonometry and learning how to set up the boundaries in CAD according to surveyor information.
